Base Scripture: Daniel 2:20-23

Reading Time: 7–9 minutes

Introduction

We live in a world full of change, uncertainty, and events that we often do not understand. Wars, crises, shifts in government, and unexpected situations can lead us to believe that history is spinning out of control. However, the Bible teaches us a powerful truth: God continues to rule over history.

In Daniel 2, after God revealed King Nebuchadnezzar’s dream, Daniel lifted a prayer of worship, recognizing that God holds power over time, nations, and human events.

Nothing happens by accident. God continues to guide history toward the fulfillment of His eternal purpose.

Biblical Text

“Blessed be the name of God forever and ever, for wisdom and might are His. And He changes the times and the seasons; He removes kings and raises up kings; He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding. He reveals deep and secret things; He knows what is in the darkness, and light dwells with Him.”

Daniel 2:20-22

GOD DIRECTS HUMAN HISTORY

History does not move forward by chance. Although man makes plans and decisions, God maintains absolute control.

  • Isaiah 46:9-10: “My counsel shall stand, and I will do all My pleasure.” From the beginning, God knows the end. He does not improvise nor lose control of events.
  • Proverbs 19:21: “There are many plans in a man’s heart, nevertheless the Lord’s counsel—that will stand.” Human beings may try to change the course of things, but God’s purpose will always prevail.
  • Psalm 33:10-11: “The Lord brings the counsel of the nations to nothing… The counsel of the Lord stands forever.” God continues to work even when we cannot see Him. He guides generations, raises nations, and fulfills His will.
  • Acts 17:26: “And He has made from one blood every nation of men… and has determined their preappointed times.” This means our lives are not outside of God’s plan. He knows our times, our seasons, and our purpose.

GOD CHANGES TIMES, SEASONS, AND RULERS

Daniel 2:21 says: “He changes the times and the seasons; He removes kings and raises up kings.”

God has authority over the seasons of life and over the governments of the earth. Nothing happens by coincidence. There are moments when we do not understand the changes we experience:

  • Doors that close.
  • Seasons that end.
  • Unexpected changes.
  • Difficult processes.

But even in the midst of it all, God is still working.

  • Romans 13:1: “For there is no authority except from God.” This does not mean that all rulers always do what is right, but rather that God remains sovereign over all human authority.
  • Proverbs 21:1: “The king’s heart is in the hand of the Lord, like the rivers of water; He turns it wherever He wishes.” God can move circumstances, open paths, and change the course of history in an instant.
  • Romans 8:28: “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God.” Even difficult situations can become instruments that God uses to fulfill His purpose in our lives.

GOD USES HISTORY TO FULFILL HIS REDEMPTIVE PLAN

From Genesis to Revelation, we see God working through history to bring salvation to the world.

  • Ephesians 1:11: “According to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will.” Nothing is disconnected from God’s eternal plan.
  • Galatians 4:4: “But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son.” Jesus came at the perfect time. Not before, and not after. This teaches us that God always works according to His calendar, even when we often want to rush the process.
  • 2 Peter 3:8: “With the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.” God is never late. He continues to work even when He seems to be silent.

The cross, the resurrection, and salvation were part of a perfect plan designed before the foundation of the world. And just as God fulfilled His redemptive plan in history, He will also fulfill His promises in our lives.

Conclusion

God rules over history. He controls the times, the seasons, and the nations. Nothing escapes His sovereignty. Although the world changes constantly, our God remains firm forever. Today we can rest knowing that:

  1. God is still on the throne.
  2. God is still working.
  3. God is still fulfilling His purpose. And our lives are secure in His hands.

Closing Prayer

Father, thank You because You rule over history and nothing happens outside of Your control. Help me to trust in Your timing even when I do not understand the processes I am going through. Strengthen my faith to rest in Your sovereignty and to remember that Your purpose will always be fulfilled.

Thank You because even in the midst of changes, You remain faithful and continue to guide my life. Today I choose to trust in Your will and walk securely in Your promises. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Sincerely, Pastor Guillermo Ayala
